Ford Motor Company got its start in much the same manner as most other automobile manufacturers of the early 1900s: A mechanical genius joined forces with financial investors to build their own version of the American dream. What made Ford different from most others was innovation and wise management that has allowed the company to survive for more than 100 years.
A fledgling automobile industry already existed at the dawn of the 20th century, but these early “horseless carriages” were primarily the domain of the rich. Henry Ford and Ford Company changed all that with the Model T. But it wasn’t just the car itself that brought personal transportation to the masses; it was a combination of good management, a solid sales organization, and the miracle of mass production.
While Ford Motor Company got its start building automobiles, an interest in commercial vehicles was evident almost from the beginning. Though early attempts at building trucks met with limited success, it was recognized that they were a useful commodity just waiting for the market to realize it.
The first of these trucks appeared in 1905, just two years after Ford’s first automobiles. It was fitted with a boxlike cargo body behind the driver’s seat, and while a useful conveyance, the Delivery Car was pulled from the market after just one year due to slow sales. A similar vehicle was introduced in 1912 on the Model T chassis, but it didn’t exactly set the world afire, either.
One of the vehicles that helped the turnaround was Ford’s first all-new postwar truck. Arriving for 1948 — a year ahead of Ford’s first new postwar car — it was a pickup that would go on to become a classic: the F-Series.
Initially called the F-1 in popular 1/2-ton form, the designation was changed in 1953 by adding “00″ to the end of the model name. Thus the F-1 became the F-100, and this nomenclature continues to designate F-Series models to this day.
In the colorful history of the F-Series, two landmark years stand out, both quite unrecognized at the time. It was in 1978 that the F-150 began its unbroken streak as the nation’s best-selling full-size pickup, and in 1983 that it began its continuous run as the nation’s best-selling vehicle of any type.
Though it’s the F-Series pickups for which Ford is probably best known, the company has built a wide variety of vehicles over the years that fall under the category of “trucks.” Besides the aforementioned medium- and heavy-duty haulers, Ford has produced cargo-oriented Panel and Sedan Delivery wagons, the innovative car/pickup Ranchero, full-size passenger and cargo vans, and the currently popular crop of minivans and SUV truck. The beginning of Ford’s second hundred years has been marked by new challenges and a host of new products to meet them, a cycle that has been repeated many times in its history. Ford F-150 trucks has been the sales leader in its class for years, but the competition is getting tougher all the time. Every other automaker like is after as big a chunk of the market as it can get, along with the coveted title of best selling. Ford is well aware of the competition and has no intention of giving up the title without a fight, and the plans to stay on top include this brand new Ford F-150.
The 2009 F-150 is a total redesign, one that Ford approached at as an opportunity, looking at every area of the truck to see where improvements were needed. Did they succeed? It looks good, but we won’t know for sure until buyers start driving trucks off of truck dealer lots.
2009 F-150 Highlights :
1. The hydroformed high-strength steel frame is lighter but stronger, offering 10-percent more torsional rigidity and higher towing and hauling capacity than previous models.

Most of the trucks you see pulling car haulers to the next CORR event or Jeep run are typically a four door heavy-duty truck. It makes sense that when you need to tow get your vehicle to the next race or trail run that you can get there in comfort and depend on your truck to handle a heavy load. This is one of the reasons why we decided to take a closer look at Dodge’s 2008 model 3500 Ram pickup. As the big-boy in Dodge’s arsenal of trucks, the 3500 is capable of towing 16,850 lbs. and has a payload capacity of 5,180 lbs. This makes the Ram 3500 a more better choice if you need to tow a race truck, jeep, buggy or your 40-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer to various events.
In most of the cases, diesel trucks can handle this type of chore but Dodge does it cleanly, with its newest power plant, the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel. The 6.7-liter engine produces 650-lbs.-ft. of torque and 350 horsepower. Although these are impressive numbers for towing applications, it’s the fact that this engine already meets the Federal government’s 2010 emissions standards that makes it feel like you’re doing your share to pollute less.This good feeling while your drive is going to cost you however, as the Bluetec Ultra-Clean Diesel System is an option that includes several components such as a Particulate Filter and NOx Storing Catalyst.
On the highway the Dodge Ram 3500 truck rode smooth, especially when towing a car hauler. The 68RFE automatic six-speed transmission also performed flawlessly, allowing us to stay in gear longer on hills and downshifting when needed to help us slow down to a stop.
Compared to the Ford F-350 truck and the GM Silverado/Sierra HD, the Ram’s 6.7 liter is quieter than the engines of its competitors. The interior of the Ram is much nicer than the Ford, but if you’re looking for ultimate luxury from a 1-ton truck, the Ram has to play second to the GMC and Silverado. Nevertheless, considering the 3500 Ram retails for $54,010 (price as tested), it’s priced less than a comparably equipped GM or Ford truck, and yet carries the same or more amenities. This makes it a good value for anyone who needs a big truck, to tow your big toys.

An example, if a person is renting a Budget rental truck from Atlanta to New York (approx 1,100 miles) on a Wednesday and dropping off on the coming Monday that is for 5 days. It will approximately cost $650 for a 10-feet truck, $680 for a 16-feet truck and $830 for a 24-feet truck. A car carrier truck cost will be $50 extra.
