The 1959 Dodge Custom Royal

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

The 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer was a rare bird. For one thing, it’s one of only 984 fliptop Custom Royals built for 1959. For another, it has that year’s new Super D-500 option, a 383-cubic-inch V-8 with twin four-barrel carburetors and a blistering 345 horsepower. The point? The Super D-500 was available on any Dodge but wasn’t often ordered, so how many other top-line ragtops could have had it too?

That 383 was a new size for Dodge as well as ‘59 Chryslers and DeSotos, the first of what would be a long line. But you didn’t need the Super D-500 to enjoy a Custom Royal ragtop, as its standard engine was a Super Ram Fire 361 with a healthy 305 bhp. In between was a single four-barrel 383 D-500 option with 320 bhp.

This 1959 Dodge D500 Custom Royal Lancer underwent an extensive restoration in the early 1990s and the odometer reads 41,000 miles since new. under the bonnet is a powerful 383 cubic-inch V8 engine breathing through a four-barrel carburetor. There is a three-speed torque flight automatic transmission and drum brakes in the front and rear. The exterior is finished in metallic Jade Green and white paint. The interior is the factory correct matching green vinyl and cloth upholstery. It was ordered from the factory with power steering, power brakes, rear window defrost, deluxe radio, dual rear speakers, dual rear antennas, and swivel front seats.

It was brought to the 2007 Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction presented by RM Auctions, where it had an estimated value of $50,000 - $70,000. It was offered without reserve and sold for a high bid of $66,000 including buyer’s premium. All these engines were efficient “wedgeheads” that worked best with responsive TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Rivaling its trademark pushbutton controls for futuristic gimmickry was another new ‘59 feature: swivel front seats. Our featured Custom Royal has these too, though other Chrysler makes also offered them. The idea was to ease entry/exit in ever-lower cars. This option was fairly popular, but it didn’t last beyond 1960.

2010 Dodge Ram

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

We’ve seen the innovative features and levels of refinement Dodge is bringing to the 2009 Ram 1500, but company executives have said little about the brand’s other pickup offerings - until now. During our recent drive of the new 2009 Ram 1500, we sat down with a number of engineers and planners and gleaned some surprising insight into what Dodge has in store for the heavy-duty Rams and the ailing Dakota.

Heavy Duty Truck

While factories tool up for the 2009 Ram 1500, Chrysler engineers are already toiling away on the next series of heavy-duty - or 2500 and 3500 - Ram models. We’re told that for the first time, the larger trucks will sport a unique front fascia, but we’re happy to hear that the large Rams will make use of the same interior as the 2009 Ram 1500.

Historically, Dodge received a lot of complaints about its truck interiors, and that’s an issue Ralph Gilles, vice president of Jeep, truck, and advanced interior design, took to heart. The new interior is exponentially nicer than that of the outgoing Ram, and it is the first product of Chrysler’s new interior design effort.

Expect to see the output from signature Cummins diesel engines remain about even with today’s engine (350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque), or even drop slightly in order to improve fuel economy. Scott Kunselman, vice president of truck product development, believes fuel economy is more important to truck buyers than the ability to pull the largest possible trailer up huge hills at 85 mph. Beefing up the transmission, chassis, and other related components to handle much more power would add weight and cost to the truck and only a handful of buyers would ever make use of it. Most of these heavy-duty trucks are used in fleets, and fleet managers are more interested in reducing fuel cost than seeing outrageous power levels.

Dodge will likely stick with the Ram HD’s current absorber NOx catalyst system, for future 2500 and 3500 used heavy-duty trucks instead of the urea treatment most diesel passenger cars use to meet EPA regulations. However, Dodge will use urea for its class 4 and 5 cab and chassis Rams because the emissions certification process is different for the larger trucks. Storing enough urea to last between oil changes is one problem for trucks with factory-installed beds, plus the urea can freeze and thus be rendered useless in northern climates. If the price of the catalyst system - which uses plenty of exotic materials - continues to rise, Dodge may have to re-evaluate this approach.

Though the Ram 1500’s multi-link coil suspension makes a lot of sense for light-duty trucks, it doesn’t in the heavy-duty segment. Virtually all three-quarter and one-ton trucks use a main leaf spring pack and a set of helper leaves to handle overload situations. There isn’t any way to add helper springs to coil springs. Dodge’s current strategy gears the 2500/3500 trucks for maximum towing and hauling, so the traditional leaf springs will remain on these models.

Though Ford has received lots of press surrounding the introduction of a consumer-oriented F-450, Dodge has no plans to play in that space. The market is simply too small for consumer pickups above the one-ton range. Dodge will continue to play in the class 4 and 5 truck segment, an area where it performs well, but these trucks will strictly be cab-chassis vehicles for commercial users.

Renting Construction Equipment Is Easy

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Those who are do-it-yourselfers know that the best and least expensive way to accomplish a task is to pull out the work gloves and get after it. But does that include projects that require construction equipment? There are several things to ask yourself before you decide whether to rent construction equipment or to call in the pros.

Two of the most important things to consider are cost and size of the project. Have you always wanted a pond? There is really nothing stopping you from building one if you have enough land and there are no zoning laws restricting it. That is going to be a pretty big project and you might be surprised how much earth has to be moved to create even a small pond for watering livestock.

Think you are not qualified to operate construction equipment? You might be right. If you have never operated a bulldozer, you are going to quickly find out that those professionals only make it look easy. There is a lot to learn before you can successfully move dirt the way it is supposed to be moved. But even if you know how to run a bulldozer or other construction equipment, you may not have enough knowledge to put the equipment to proper use.

KNOWING THE 2005 MERCEDES-BENZ SLK 350

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The 360-horsepower V8, the second-generation SLK is longer and wider than the original, the 2005 SLK offers more passenger room and a host of new features. The all new SLK offers a retractable hardtop that lowers and raises in seconds. The new version, adds a technology that allows the head restraints to blow warm air at neck level.Other new technologies on the SLK include bi-xenon headlamps with a cornering function and a seven-speed-automatic transmission. Three different engine variants are available for the new car, developing from 120 kW/163 hp to 265 kW/360 hp. The range includes for the first time in this vehicle class ? an eight-cylinder power unit.

The convertible hardtop was redesigned for faster operation and a more compact size when folded for added trunk space. Large analog gauges dominate the dashboard, but the center stack is still awash in small buttons and knobs.

Today’s Mercedes-Benz SLK was never taken seriously as a sports car, even in supercharged AMG format. Perhaps this new Benz roadster, with its stout V6 and V8 engines, revised hardware and sleeker look, will provide the goods to go head-to-head with the BMW Z4, Honda S2000 and Porsche Boxster.

Even With All Of The Imports On The Market The Chevrolet Truck Remains A Winner

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Chevrolet trucks seem to have been around for as long as cars have. This is true in more ways than one. There are still plenty of people driving vintage models that perhaps your grandfather or great grandfather drove so many years ago. These are now considered to be collector’s items by many car enthusiasts. They buy old Chevy trucks and then lovingly restore them to their previous glory. By the time they are finished, you would never know that they had rolled off the manufacturer’s line so many decades ago.

Chevy is famous for many types of vehicles. As the years passed so did the style of the car. However, even with the newer, sleeker models of truck available, there was a longing for the old style, so they brought back a classic model, slightly altered to make it look more modern. Chevy is also famous for their line of trucks. This has been true for decades and is still true today. They’ve come a long way from the models your older relatives used to drive, being sleeker and carrying all of the latest technology.

When your ancestors drove them, they probably weren’t purchased because of their aesthetics. They were probably purchased to do tasks such as hauling things. Many of them were highly regarded as farm and ranch vehicles. This was particularly true in rural areas where the roads were unfinished and rough. The Chevy truck is renowned for its ability to handle tough terrain, even while burdened with bales of hay or vegetables that needed to get to the market to sell. You will often see these trucks in old movies, covered in mud and driven by cattle ranchers. Times have changed, but Chevy Trucks continue to be a prime choice in work vehicle as well as family transportation.

Now instead of seeing them being driven by ranchers, you see soccer moms behind the wheel, with her children in the back seat. Many men purchase them, not for their capability of carrying heavy loads, but because of their cool look.

A favorite Chevy Truck is the Silverado. Not only are these sleek looking vehicles, they retain the speed and durability that Chevy is known to produce. You can get them with all the bells and whistles and may not even want to haul anything in it, because it might spoil the look. Another consumer favorite is the Chevy Colorado. With its two tone detailing and attractive contours, this truck is coveted by many.

There are a variety of Chevy cars and trucks that are suitable for just about any type of travel that you can think of. Whether a classic from old days or one with the classy look of the present, you can’t go wrong with whatever choice you make.

Pocket Dirt Bike Is The Master On Wheels

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Pocket dirt bike specifically refers to a much smaller bike model. The introduces of the pocket dirt variety are trying hard to popularize this version of dirt bike to people of all ages. These manufacturers have come up with various pocket-sized editions of bikes at negligible costs. Giovanni, Blatta, Vulkin, Panterra and the big bosses like Honda and Yamaha are busy stealing the show with this pocket edition of dirt bikes.

Pocket dirt bicycle is the fastest roadrunner of the century

Yes, they are petite but in no way powerless. Some can even reach speeds of 80 miles per hour. Pocket dirt bikes are available in all shapes and sizes. They look exactly same like their big brothers but not in scale. This particular dirt bike variety is constructed in all sizes of 44cc, 49cc, 50cc, 85cc, 90cc and 110cc. Therefore, you have lots of options to choose from when you plan to buy.

Just check the Internet and you will find several dirt bike manufacturers ready to advertise their specified models of pocket dirt bicycles. It is better that you shop on line so as to get hold of the latest pocket dirt bikes. Compare the prices well and then make the decision.

Mini dirt bikes are very similar to the pocket racers and anyone can confuse one with the other. Both the mini bikes look same and both can carry a payload of up to 300 pounds. Both the bikes are light and you can carry them easily under your arms or in the trunk of your car.
